Sapphire is known mainly as a blue gemstone, but it also comes in a range of pinks, oranges and greens. As a matter of fact, if pink sapphires tips over to full red, it is a Ruby. They are both members of the corundum family and have the same chemical chemical composition and mineral structure. It is the small impurities in the gem that give it its distinctive colour.

Persian myth of sapphire sky

There is an ancient Persian legend that told of the creation of the earth. They believed that the sky was a giant cosmic rock crystal made of sapphire. Within it nestled first water and then the earth.

In the beginning, the earth was flat, but eventually the first mountain grew, and it took 800 years to lay its roots deep into the earth and its crown touch the sky. At the very moment that it's peaks touched the sky - the sun, the moon and the stars were born.

Sometimes the sun was behind the mountain top casting long shadows and letting the the stars shine through. Other times, the sun was in front of the mountain top, and the beautiful light shone through the sapphire and that is why the sky is blue.

So the next time a kid asks you "why is the sky blue".... Now you know what to say ;0)

Did you know that ruby and sapphire are the same mineral Corundum. Ruby is the red variety, and sapphire is every other colour.  I have a lovely variety of coloured sapphires, have a browse around my shop now :)
